I am a Malaysian, a foreigner. This article is to share my experience with my fellow Malaysian friends who is interested to apply for course in Singapore :) I applied with only SPM certificate fro Diploma course in Singapore.
I am lucky to have a Singaporean friend who helps me so much by saving expenses on rental. To rent a room in Singapore is not easy. However, as long as you have money anything can settle HAHA If you have limited cash, you may want to calculate your total expenses for the study period.
The average price to spend for a meal at SIM Institution is about SGD5-8. If you're talking about hawker center then the average can be SGD4-8 per meal. Depending on what you order. You can always opt for fast food and other restaurants. No problem. This is for meals expenses. Then you need to find a room to rent, you can either share it with other students or to get a room for yourself or even a house if you are rich enough😉 Other expenses to consider such as transportation fees, miscellaneous fees for dating/pens/books/paper printing/books, shopping, personal cares, and etc.
Also if you are planning to be a Full-time student, just to remind you, the government does not allow you to work within the contract years even during semester break. They will cancel your Student Pass(an NRIC that you will be held in Singapore when you come and study here) immediately if found guilty and kick your ass out from Singapore. No joke! Only students from the APPROVED Institutions (check ICA website) will be allowed to work during the semester break.
I am going to share my experience of applying for the course from the beginning till the end and school commencement! Hope it helps you in some way.
Before I come to know about the Singapore Institution of Management (SIM), a Private Institute in Singapore, I actually wanted to go for Temasek Polytechnic which needs approx. 3 years to study and also need to work in Singapore after graduation as part of the requirements.
I chose SIM for its Diploma course because of its shorter length of course period which is one and a half years. Although the course is pricey, you get what you want sooner than the rest and hopefully I learn well too.
So first thing you need to do is to check out their Intake dates, they have FOUR intakes in a year(may vary from time to time). Different course has different Intakes and dates. Intakes dates can be found here
If you are interested, you have to apply two months in advance before the Intake commencement and it is also part of the requirement.
You need to start with creating an account with the Institution from the link below or from the Institutions website directly because the link may change from time to time.
You are to click on the first green link on top to create an account and to apply using that account you signed up for.
Sadly, for International Applicants, there will be SGD321 of application fees. Non-refundable even if unsuccessful :( So guys, please take note.
Then you follow the instructions. Make payments for the application fees. Then fill in the blanks accordingly. You also need to scan all your certificates and submit them from here.
When all the information is filled correctly, you can submit. Please submit everything at once to avoid complications and delays for your application.
So, meaning you want to scan all the relevant documents before you start applying. Such as certificates, your travel ID(Passport), and passport size photo. If you are unsure about the size, no worries, it will be stated on the webpage as you go along.
Your SIM email address and password to log in to Simconnect will be send to your personal email. Simconnect is the private institutions portal for students. The email looks like this
You will also receive an email asking you to fill in the Student Pass form. The Institution will apply Student Pass on your behalf.
The institute will help you to apply for Student Pass, so just fill in the form as they asked. After you fill up filling up and submitting the Student Pass form. Soon after your submission, you will receive another email regarding your Student Pass application number for your reference and you want to take note of the application number.
ALL the instructions will be given to you after each application. You want to keep tracking the status of your application every week or days(if possible) from Simconnect portal(the Institutions website) and your personal email.
This is the part where everybody gets nervous because it decides your fate! XD Always keep track of your personal email. VERY IMPORTANT.
Anytime in a month, you will be able to see your application status, if it is APPROVED (you will see the Status in SIMCONNECT portal), they will give you a due date to accept the offer and it is usually available for you to accept only for a week.
After accepting the offer, you will receive a confirmation email of the Student Contract, commencement date of your course and all other details in your personal email. Like this one..
Follow all the instructions and you will never go wrong. Whatever documents uploaded in the email that they sent you, download everything, and read carefully. Make sure you don't miss any part. The application to study in SIM is done. Now you need to wait for Student Pass to approved by Singapore Minister of Manpower(MOM).
Normally, it takes about a month for them to process your Student Pass, you can check every day if you want. If I were you, I will check only once a week because it takes approximately a month to process anyway. Check the status through Simconnect Portal and personal email.
Once your Student Pass application has been APPROVED. This is the email you will get..
In this email, you will receive THREE documents :
1) Enquiry on Medical Report
-You either get a medical report from your own country, or in Singapore or do it at the school because they provide the outsource service). In order to take the Medical Test/Report at the school, SIM will inform you of the specific date.
2) e-appointment guide
-It's a file with guidance. To teach you how to make appointment before collecting your Student Pass at the ICA Building. Collecting Student Pass from ICA building is also called the Formalities. The final step of getting your student pass.
3) Retrieved Student Pass from SIMCONNECT
-The appointment letter for Student Pass collection, IPA ICA letter with Fin number on it, these are the documents that you need to bring along to ICA Building to collect your Student Pass :)
Read the instructions.
After the collection of Student Pass from ICA Building, all you need to do is PREPARE for school commencement. For international student, you will need to attend an Orientation Session before class commencement at the Institution. The dates will be sent out to you in your personal email.
Another insurance cover letter will be sent to your email after the course started.
That is all for the new application at Singapore Institutions of Management Global Education (SIMGE) or SIM in short.
If you have any question please feel free to comment or email me!
I'll be very happy to help you out! :D
